It is a lip smacking Mediterranean dish that requires ingredients like: black pepper, Celtic sea salt, a single lemon juice, lightly grated rind, 3 garlic cloves crushed, 2 tsp. coriander seeds crushed, 2 onions thinly sliced, 3 tbsp. olive oil, 450g fresh okra, and 400g can chopped tomatoes. Celtic sea salt and black pepper are simply meant to provide a finishing touch to the diet.

You may need to be acquainted with the cooking process. Transfer oil into your cooking pan. Add onions and coriander. Before the pan gets hot enough, make sure the okra has been cut. Do not allow the onions become too soft while frying. Timing is to be taken seriously.

It is now time for tomatoes to be added, stirred after. Allow the mixture 20 minutes of cooking before topping it with lemon rind, pepper and salt. Give it another short period of cooking before bring down the pan.

Margarita is another alkaline diet recipe, though a juice. With a lemon, a cucumber, fresh root ginger and 4 celery stalks, you can make two margaritas. You will also need to add Himalayan salt as a finishing touch. If you cannot lay hands on Himalayan salt you can make do with regular salt, only that when it comes to preparing margaritas, the former is the best. After all is done, proceed to have a taste to know what it really is in the mouth. You may need to add some more ginger if you so desired.

How To Diet: What Is A Fad Diet, And Are They Dangerous?

What is a fad diet anyway?

A fad diet is one that is popular for a period of time and often makes promises of extreme weight loss in a very short period of time. Often the fad diets are based on faulty nutritional principles and cannot work; other fad diets are downright dangerous. And they are surely not recognized by the FDA.

Some of the fad diets which have been "the rage" over the past few decades include:

• The 7-day Grapefruit Diet

• The Pineapple and Tuna diet

• The Maple Syrup Lemon Cleanse Diet

• The Chocolate diet

• The Tapeworm Diet (yuk!)

• The Cabbage Soup Diet

And, on and on it goes. Most fad diets come onto the radar because a Hollywood celebrity begins touting them. The star makes the talk show circuit, looking fabulous of course, and the rest of us jump onto the band wagon.

Never mind that the celebrity in question has a few advantages over us "mere mortals". They're usually paid for their endorsement, they have access to the finest makeup artists in the world, and they use personal trainers on the side. Makes a tapeworm look even less appealing, doesn't it?

So, what are the downsides of fad diets? Let's look at some examples from the past to get a flavor of what's wrong with them:

1. The Dukan is a bad diet because it relies on cutting out whole food groups and then slowly adding them back. It is never wise to cut out foods that have been established to be nutritionally necessary for health.

2. The Paleo diet: Oh good! Let's eat like a caveman... root veggies, shellfish, eggs, spices, fruits. Pass a mouse, please.

3. The HCG diet requires hormone injections along with a calorie restriction of between 500 and 700 per day. Well, of course you're going to lose weight if you eat 600 calories per day. You might just as well skip the hormones.

4. Proponents of cleansing and detox diets declare that our weight problems is because heavy and sticky fecal residue is interfering with proper digestion. (Wonder why docs who do proctoscopies for a living have never seen the evidence when they're inside your innards?).

There is an endless array of gimmicks on the market, just out there waiting to access the inside your wallet and leave with a full take-home box.

Stick to the principles of good nutrition and you will lose weight and keep it off.

The Special K Diet: The Pros and Cons

Cereal manufacturer Kellogg's has come up with a new diet idea called the Special K Diet which has been the subject of debate amongst nutritionists regarding its effectiveness and health benefits. It's a pretty simple diet that is not as restrictive as most fad diets are. The basic idea of this diet is that for 2 weeks, you should eat Kellogg's Special K cereal for breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Your third meal could be anything, as long as it's a balanced meal. Snacking is not prohibited, although it is recommended that you stick to fruits and veggies or choose from the Special K brand snack options for better results. Like any diet, there are different opinions floating around about this diet plan. If you study the pros and cons, it would be easier to decide whether this diet is the right one for you.

The Upside

If you're looking for a quick weight loss fix, then the Special K diet is a good option. This diet is designed to make you lose up to 6 lbs in 2 weeks. If you follow it strictly, you may be able to slip into jeans that are a size smaller or lose the extra weight you gained over the holidays. This could also be a starting point to ease into a healthier lifestyle. Another good thing about it is that it is not too restrictive. You can still enjoy snacks and your usual beverage choices. By replacing 2 meals with cereal and skim milk, you are already cutting your calorie and fat intake for the duration of the diet, but still get the nutrients your body needs. It is simple to follow and easy to maintain, so there is less worry about falling off the wagon.

The Downside

The Special K Diet is not recommended for long-term weight loss plans. In fact, going over the 2 week period is discouraged. If you're looking to lose more weight in a continuous manner, consider other diet options instead. There is a risk of gaining back all the weight lost after going back to your normal eating habits. Also, Special K cereals and products are not as high in fiber as one may assume since it is not based on whole grains. You may have to compensate for this by eating more fruits, vegetables and other fiber rich foods to avoid constipation.

Some people see this diet as a marketing ploy to sell more cereal and snack products; however, it is backed by research done at the Loughborough University in England and there have been a number of success stories from people who have tried it. It is still best to consult a doctor or a nutritionist before starting the Special K diet or any other diet.
